The Automation Federation (AF) is an association of member organizations engaged in manufacturing and process automation activities. The Automation Federation provides industry-wide strategic analysis and coordination through its member organizations.

The Federation is the only organization that takes a holistic approach to automation; therefore, with the Automation Federation’s leadership and support, member organizations can work more effectively to fulfill their individual missions, advance the science and engineering of automation technologies and applications, and develop the workforce needed to capitalize on the benefits of automation.

Some common objectives of the AF member organizations are to:

  • Promote the value and image of the automation profession in contributing to effectiveness and efficiency of manufacturing, building automation, transportation, utilities, defense, and more
  • Facilitate the development and dissemination of educational and informational resources intended to develop new generations of automation professionals, enhance the effectiveness of existing professionals, and advance the automation profession
  • Facilitate the promulgation of industry standards that enhance the efficiency, cost effectiveness, and safety of automation technologies and applications

Our members and the public recognize and utilize the Automation Federation as the global authority on all matters of relevance to automation and as the VoiceofAutomation.

  • Develop and enhance the automation profession
  • Provide leadership for the automation profession in service to the public
  • Promote the image and recognition of the automation profession
  • Serve as the Voice of Automation and as the recognized automation resource for the profession and the public
  • Strengthen the Automation Federation as a facilitator and resource to the profession and to the public

Our Focus Areas:

Many important initiatives on which the Automation Federation is working involve increasing the recognition and enhancing the image of the automation profession. In addition, we have identified several key topic areas relevant to all industry that are vital to the future viability of automation and its benefits to society. Currently, our focus areas include: Workforce Development, including the development of an Automation Curriculum; Cybersecurity; and the implementation of SmartGrid.

As we move forward, advancing our mission and those of our members, we plan to:

  • Strengthen our role as the recognized automation resource—the Voice of Automation
  • Broaden our membership to ensure proper representation of all automation professionals across all of industry
  • Expand our international reach and influence
  • Expand and enhance our partnerships with industry, government, and academic groups
  • Communicate the contributions and value of automation professional for the future of business and industry
  • Leverage the core competencies of the Automation Federation member organizations
  • Improve the education and training options available to automation professionals (including engineers and technicians) around the world
